The Marble Falls High School softball team lost to Georgetown Gateway 6-0 March 7 in District 24-4A play.
As a team, the Lady Mustangs (1-1) got a total of three hits from Kylie Roberts, Callie Phillips and Sophia Biagini. Gateway senior pitcher Chloe Ellis recorded 18 strikeouts.
Ellis was the district’s Pitcher of the Year in 2024.
“She looks better than last year,” Marble Falls head coach Alex Lozoya said. “Her (pitches) had more movement and more jump to (them). That’s very tough to compete with in the box. She put in the work in the offseason. She mowed us down. She has more command. She got stronger. She put time in the weight room. She gave herself the best chance to go compete in this competitive district.”
Meanwhile the Lady Gators scored 6 runs, 3 unearned, off 13 hits led by Mckenzie Rogers, who had 2 RBI off 4 hits.
Lozoya noted freshman pitcher Brooklyn Damico “did a great job of keeping them off balance” and relying on the defense to make routine plays. Pitcher Callie Phillips came in forced the Lady Gators “to put the ball in play” to get on base.
“Overall I was happy with our girls’ pitching and playing defense,” he said. “We were aggressive at the plate but not chasing out of the zone.”
Salado (2-0) is in first place in the district standings thanks to wins against Burnet (1-1) 6-0 and Lampasas (0-2) 7-3. Gateway is second and Burnet, Jarrell (1-1) and Marble Falls are tied for third, while Taylor (0-2) and Lampasas are searching for victories.
Jarrell defeated Lampasas 14-13 by forcing the Lady Badgers to leave the bases loaded in the final inning.
Marble Falls travels to Lampasas Tuesday, March 11, with the junior varsity playing at 5 p.m. and the varsity to follow.
